Technology has become an inseparable part of modern life. From smartphones and tablets to artificial intelligence and social media, today’s children are growing up in a world that is vastly different from the one their parents experienced.
While technology offers incredible opportunities for learning, creativity, and communication, it also presents unique challenges that every parent must learn to navigate.
As both a parent and an Education Technology Professional, I have seen firsthand how technology can positively shape a child’s future when used intentionally. However, I have also observed how a lack of guidance can expose children to risks that many parents may not fully understand.
The goal is not to keep children away from technology. Instead, the goal should be to help them develop healthy, responsible, and productive digital habits.
Technology Is Here to Stay
One of the biggest mistakes parents can make is viewing technology as an enemy.
Technology is not going away. In fact, it is becoming increasingly integrated into education, business, healthcare, communication, and almost every aspect of daily life.
Rather than focusing solely on restricting technology, parents should focus on teaching children how to use it responsibly and effectively.
Children who understand technology are likely to have greater opportunities in the future than those who do not.
Focus on Quality, Not Just Screen Time
Many parents worry about how much time their children spend on screens.
While screen time is important, the quality of that screen time matters even more.
There is a significant difference between a child spending one hour learning coding, creating digital artwork, or building a project and a child spending one hour mindlessly consuming content online.
Parents should pay close attention to what their children are doing online, not just how long they are doing it.
Teach Digital Safety Early
Just as we teach children how to cross the road safely, we must also teach them how to navigate the digital world safely.
Children should understand:
- Never sharing personal information online
- Recognising suspicious messages and scams
- Respecting others online
- Reporting inappropriate content
- Understanding online privacy
Digital safety is no longer optional. It is a life skill.
Encourage Creation Over Consumption
One principle I strongly believe in is helping children become creators rather than simply consumers of technology.
Instead of only watching videos, children can learn video editing.
Instead of only playing games, they can learn game development.
Instead of only using apps, they can learn coding and create their own solutions.
When children move from consuming technology to creating with it, they develop confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills that benefit them throughout life.
Keep Communication Open
Children are more likely to approach parents about online challenges when they feel safe discussing them.
Creating an environment of trust is essential.
Parents should regularly talk with their children about:
- Their favorite apps
- Online experiences
- Digital friendships
- Challenges they encounter online
These conversations often reveal valuable insights and help parents provide guidance when needed.
Be a Digital Role Model
Children learn more from what they observe than what they are told.
If parents spend excessive time on their phones while discouraging children from doing the same, mixed messages are sent.
Healthy digital habits should be modelled consistently within the family.
Preparing Children for the Future
The future will belong to individuals who can effectively use technology to learn, create, innovate, and solve problems.
As parents, our responsibility is not to shield children from technology but to equip them with the knowledge, values, and skills needed to use it wisely.
Technology can either become a distraction or a powerful tool for growth.
With proper guidance, encouragement, and support, children can harness technology to unlock opportunities, develop valuable skills, and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
